Does Your Teen Have Food Allergies?

Health & Medical Blog

If your teen experiences digestive, health, or skin problems after eating meals, you may wonder if they have allergies to food. Some types of food can cause allergies in children and teens. Food allergies can be dangerous without the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Learn more about food allergies and how to find out if your teen has one below.

What Should You Know About Food Allergies?

Food allergies develop when a child's immune system doesn't accept certain types of food, ingredients, or substances, such as peanuts, soy, or eggs. Most children will gradually outgrow their allergies to food. However, some young people will continue to experience food allergies in their teens. Teens who have allergies to food will exhibit a number of symptoms over time, including coughing, vomiting, and trouble breathing. Some young people will develop stomach aches and diarrhea as well. The allergy symptoms can be worse with certain types of food. For example, peanuts can cause life threatening or severe symptoms in people. If your teen does experience any of the symptoms above, have an allergy center test them for food allergies immediately.

How Do You Diagnose and Treat Food Allergies?

Because a large number of foods and substances can cause allergies in young people, an allergy center will need to test your loved one right away. Food allergy tests look for antibodies, or chemicals, in the body that fight foreign substances. If your loved one has a large number of antibodies in their blood or urine, it may be due to allergies.

Food allergy tests can also help the doctor at an allergy center diagnose the type of allergy your teen has. A physician may introduce certain substances into your loved one's body to see how they interact or react to them. A doctor can narrow down the list of substances or foods that may or may not be responsible for your teen's allergy symptoms.

After a physician determines the cause of your teen's symptoms, they'll do one or more of the following things:

  • eliminate or remove the offending substance or food from your teen's diet
  • monitor your teen's symptoms
  • treat your teen with allergy medication

If your teen has multiple food allergies, a center may change their diet completely. Your teen may need to continue the new diet until they grow out of the food allergies or until they reach adulthood.
