A Guide On Pregnancy Care

Health & Medical Blog

There are two types of healthcare for expectant mothers, namely prenatal and postpartum care. Pregnancy care involves treatments and training during pregnancy, labor, and immediately after delivery. Essentially, pregnancy care is focused on the health of the mother and the baby. Here are critical insights on what pregnancy care entails.

Prenatal care starts a few months before you try to conceive. During this period, it is essential to observe several healthy habits. You should quit smoking and drinking alcohol. It is advisable to take folic acid supplements daily. Avoid contact with toxic substances. Consult your doctor about any medical conditions you have and any prescription drugs and dietary supplements you take.

During Pregnancy

Here are some critical healthcare practices you should follow during pregnancy:

Regular Doctor Visits

You need to have regular healthcare appointments with your doctor during pregnancy. Typically, scheduled visits should occur monthly for the first six months. Then you should go in every two weeks in the seventh and eighth month. Finally, you should make weekly visits during the last month of pregnancy. During these visits, the doctor conducts health checks on the mother and the baby. Such tests may include weight gain, baby growth and heart rate, blood tests, and blood pressure. The doctor also checks the baby's position in the last months of pregnancy.

Baby Classes

Expectant mothers should also join baby classes before delivery. These special classes usually help pregnant women understand what to expect during pregnancy. They prepare you for the delivery. Expectant mothers learn essential skills for taking care of a newly born baby. Such education is critical, especially when it is your first baby. In addition, you will have the opportunity to seek information on any pregnancy questions or concerns. You also get acquainted with the hospital and the staff.

Physical Exercises

Pregnancy exercises help expectant mothers to stay active for general health. Exercising helps to improve blood circulation, manage weight, improve sleep and reduce stress. Thus, you should take a pregnancy exercise class or walk for at least 20 minutes every day. Other physical activities may include swimming and yoga. However, these activities ought to occur moderately. Practice Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic muscles, as they make delivery easier and reduce the risk of urinary incontinence. However, you should always consult your doctors before starting such physical programs.

Postpartum Care

Postpartum care begins immediately after birth and lasts for up to two months after delivery. Mothers undergo a lot emotional and physical changes as they nurse their babies. Therefore, it is essential to get enough rest to regain strength and reduce exhaustion. Ensure you get proper nutrition for breastfeeding. Finally, make vaginal care part of your daily routine. This care includes sex abstinence for up to six weeks after delivery and a doctor checkup.

In summary, prenatal and postpartum care are vital components of pregnancy care. Ensure you see a doctor and follow instructions for a healthy pregnancy and baby.
