What To Expect During Dental Surgery

Health & Medical Blog

Dental surgeries are surprisingly common, and most people will undergo at least one dental surgery within their lives. Dental surgeries are almost always performed as outpatient procedures, often using local anesthesia for pain management. A dental surgeon can provide specialized care for patients who require dental surgeries, from root canal therapy to wisdom teeth extractions. Here are four things you can expect when undergoing dental surgery.

1. Consultation

The first step for any surgical procedure is the consultation. Consultations are usually scheduled as separate appointments. During a consultation, your dental surgeon will discuss the goals of your upcoming treatment. They will also examine your teeth during this time, which will give them information that will be necessary during your dental surgery. Consultations can last anywhere from half an hour to an hour.

2. Anesthesia

On the day of your dental surgery, you will check in with the receptionist. You'll be shown to the dental chair, where you will wait for the dental surgeon to arrive. Once your treatment begins, your dental surgeon will administer anesthesia. In most cases, this will come in the form of local injections of lidocaine. However, particularly nervous patients may choose to be sedated using intravenous medication as well. If you're having extensive dental surgery, your dentist may give you the option of sleeping through the procedure using general anesthesia.

3. Frequent Check-Ins

If you're awake during your dental surgery, your surgeon will make sure to check in with you periodically. Some dental surgeries can take an hour or more. During this time, your jaw may get fatigued, or you might need to take a break for another reason. Your surgeon will ask you to raise your hand if you need them to stop for any reason. Your dental surgeon will work quickly and accurately while making sure that you remain comfortable throughout your treatment.

4. Instructions For Aftercare

Once your dental surgery is finished, you will be free to go. People who have undergone general anesthesia will be allowed to recover in a quiet room. Before you leave the surgeon's office, you will be given aftercare instructions. You will likely be told to avoid certain activities, like drinking alcohol and smoking, while your mouth heals. If you received stitches, you may be told to return to the dentist to have them removed in a few weeks. Following all your aftercare instructions will ensure that a successful surgery has a successful healing period.
