Make Big Lifestyle Changes To Increase Heart Health Using These Four Tips

Health & Medical Blog

About 1.5 million heart attacks and strokes occur within the United States each year, and many of them could have been prevented had the person focused on the health of their heart. Many of the risk factors these patients experienced could have been avoided had they known what to look out for. In an effort to prevent even greater risks of heart attacks, here are some lifestyle habits you want to be conscious of.

Get Plenty of Exercise

It is not uncommon to hear that you should exercise. Exercising offers many benefits like losing weight, gaining strength, and even increasing serotonin. One of the biggest benefits of exercising is to keep your heart healthy. Your exercise regimen should be a combination of aerobic, safe, and consistent. Experts suggest moderate intensity activity performed most days of the week. You want to start out small and build up to about 30 to 40 minutes of continuous activity.

Take the Flu Vaccine

If you already have heart disease, then contracting the flu can put you at a higher risk of having a heart attack. The best way to fight off heart attacks is to get the influenza vaccine. The flu shot is more effective than the nasal spray. During flu season, you want to be especially careful. Should you contract the flu, the heart disease may make your body too weak to fight it off. This is why the vaccine is so important when flu season comes around.

Drink More Water

Some people may be astonished that drinking more water could ward off heart attacks, but this simple tip is supported by science. In fact, it was found that men who drank five or more glasses of water a day had only a 46% chance of a fatal heart attack and women had only a 59% chance of a fatal heart attack compared to those who drank only two or less glasses of water a day, according to the American Journal of Epidemiology. A key way to remember how much water to drink each day is to drink about half your weight in ounces

Engage in Healthier Relationships

It is no surprise that there is a correlation between stress and heart attacks. When you are under an enormous amount of stress, it can put a strain on your health. You may not sleep well, think well, or even eat well. Engaging in good relationships can actually reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. In fact, a study of middle aged women found that those who had highly satisfying marriages had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. This may be just what you need to cut ties with some of those unhealthy relationships that are bringing your health down.
