Pros And Cons Of Gum Contouring

Health & Medical Blog

Gum contouring, or gingival sculpting, is an option if you need to reduce the amount of gum that shows when you smile. The procedure is typically performed in-office and the results are seen within a short period of time. If you are considering gum contouring, you should weigh the pros and cons.

Advantages

One of the advantages of gum contouring is that it is relatively painless. The cosmetic dentist relies on a laser to target the gum that needs to be contoured, which cuts down on the possibility of experiencing pain. Your cosmetic dentist might opt for a local anesthetic if you are concerned about pain or have anxiety about the procedure.

After the procedure is done, there are no restrictions on what you can do. You can immediately return to your usual activities without worrying about damaging your gums. You also have the added benefit of the outcome being permanent. You do not have to worry about your gum line changing again and requiring more sculpting.

If you have been self-conscious about your smile in the past, gum contouring can resolve that issue. The results will get rid of the extra gum and leave you with a better smile.

Disadvantages

There are is a downside to undergoing gum contouring. Unless your insurance covers the cost, you could have to pay for it yourself. The cost of gum contouring can be as much as $350 to reshape the gum that surrounds one tooth. If your dentist feels that it is medically necessary, there is a possibility that the insurance company would help cover the costs.

There is also a possibility of developing an infection after the procedure. However, this is completely avoidable. Your cosmetic dentist can prescribe an antibiotic to take following the procedure. You also need to practice good oral hygiene to keep the amounts of harmful bacteria in your mouth low.

It is possible for the results to be less than what you desired. You can easily overcome this disadvantage by ensuring that the dentist you choose is experienced in using lasers to sculpt the gum. Talk to your cosmetic dentist about his or her experience beforehand.

Gum contouring is not a new practice, but it is one that requires a cosmetic dentist that is well-trained. Before the procedure, talk to your dentist about your expectations and what he or she believes the outcome of your surgery will be.
